X is developing a method to prevent links in responses

X is working on a new feature to combat spam posts on its platform, according to Nima Owji, an independent app researcher. The feature will allow users to disable links in replies, as shown in an image posted by Owji. Users can choose to prevent others from responding with a link to their posts by ticking a box for this option.

Christopher Stanley, X’s director of security engineering, confirmed the feature’s existence in response to a post about it. “My team built this,” Stanley wrote in his response. In addition to keeping spambots at bay, the feature can also prevent real users from promoting their websites in other people’s posts. However, it can also prevent users from posting links to legitimate sources if they are trying to expose false information and prevent the spread of fake news.

Owji previously discovered that X was experimenting with an in-app currency designed to help content creators monetize the platform. After several months of rampant impersonation on the website, he noticed that it was also developing new ID features. He also discovered that the company wanted to compete with LinkedIn by offering job postings to established organizations.
